Why do i farm?
Farming has benefits when it comes to shaping the minds of kids. Farming teaches kids great motivation, good work ethic, kindness, leadership, and several other aspects that make a well-rounded individual.
I have lived my whole life working on a farm. I have been in tractors and combines since I was only two months old. Now after 18 years, I cannot imagine growing up any differently. Farming has taught me everything I know, especially that hard work truly does pay off. Working long days, early morning to late night to get the benefits from the year's work. Farmers do not get paid every week or every other week like a normal job. Farmers get paid once a year. The harder you work and the more time you put in increases the benefits you get (that paycheck). I have also learned never to give up. If something does not go as planned then I do not stop, I find a way to fix it and keep going.
One of the most important things farming has taught me is the true act of kindness. I do not do things only because they benefit me or my family. True kindness is helping others. You will not experience any kindness as you do in the farming community. An example of that is when my Grandpa was dealing with brain cancer and had to be hospitalized during harvest in the fall. He was unable to harvest that year’s crops, so farmers from all over our area came together and helped. They brought combines, agons, and other machinery/tools needed for the harvest to help. Growing up on a farm gives you an amazing work ethic also. Whether the child decides to continue farming when they grow older or if they chose a different career path, the motivation that they learned from farming will continue with them. Farmers do not get the option to stop or give up. They may be able to find different options to avoid problems, but they must keep going. Lastly, farming provides kids with leadership skills. Many farm kids are given tasks that are their responsibility to do. If one grows on a farm that has animals many kids are given the responsibility to feed and care for them daily. As other siblings grow, they most likely will help with the tasks and it is the older sibling’s job to be a leader and lead them in the right direction on how things operate.
Not everyone has had the opportunity to grow up on a farm but those that have are some of the strongest people with many talents that will help them succeed in the world.
